Hyperpigmentation: dark spots and uneven skin tone
Dark marks can remain after acne, irritation or a skin injury. One cause is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, when skin produces extra pigment after inflammation. Understanding the cause matters before choosing products or procedures. A consultation does not establish that every dark patch has the same diagnosis.
For concerns about marks on your back, chest, arms or legs, use our body hyperpigmentation consultation guide to prepare questions about the cause, proposed options, risks, follow-up and costs.
When your routine causes irritation
Skin-care and hair-care products that irritate the skin can contribute to dark spots. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends gentler products when irritation is a trigger. Bring a list of the products you use and describe any burning, stinging or previous reactions.
Sun protection and pigment care
For dark-spot care, the AAD recommends tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide, with broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher and water resistance. Iron oxide helps protect against visible light, which can contribute to dark spots. Ask how sun protection fits your individual plan.
Fading takes time and varies with the cause and depth of pigment. No product or consultation guarantees a particular result.

Skin care consultations in Stockbridge
Bring your current product list, skin history and questions about your routine. A service appearing on our website does not mean it is appropriate for every person.
Your skin. Your routine. Your questions.
- Which parts of my current skincare routine should we discuss?
- How should my skin history and previous experiences shape the options we consider?
- If we discuss facial care or chemical peels, what preparation, risks and follow-up should I understand?
- What would the proposed care cost, and what alternatives should I consider?
A plan you understand
Clinical suitability is assessed before treatment. A consultation does not guarantee a procedure or result, and membership does not replace individual assessment.
